The European Court of Human Rights has enabled Viktor Orbán’s re-election.
We call upon European decision-makers to investigate the root causes behind the Court’s persistent indifference towards grievous violations of European values.
The Hungarian government has reshaped the election framework over the last 12 years with the aim to provide an undue advantage for the ruling Fidesz party. In 2014 and 2018 the members of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Missions observed various violations to the right to free elections, including gerrymandering.(more…)
Gerrymandering violates the right to vote
The Hungarian government is influencing the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections with gerrymandering. The parliamentary majority has prevented the revision of constituency boundaries despite significant changes in the population over the past few years. The current constituency boundaries will lead to a violation of the right to equal suffrage because almost 1,000,000 voters will have significantly weaker voting rights than the average voter. As the Constitutional Court has refused to provide protection against this violation of the right to free elections, Hungary Free and Fair has escalated the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
On 22 February 2021 we declared our intention to establish Hungary Free and Fair, a non-governmental organization that advocates free and fair elections in Hungary.
We have defined our goals, adopted our statutes and elected our representative.
Our application for registration is currently pending at the Budapest Metropolitan Court.
We are eager to share and to learn from others.
Please feel free to ask questions, share your thoughts or just say hello.
